I initially started this blog to make Science Fiction and Fantasy book recommendations, and the first (oldest) 12 entries are just that: http://www.animeultima.tv/forums/blo...ations&u=97975

Having accumulated enough book recommendations for now, I am mostly focusing on jokes and stories about events in my life. Joke entries will have quotes around the title ("title"), and reminiscences will have angle brackets (<title>). Just in case you can't tell the difference...

Hybrid vigor

Posted July 31, 2013 at 05:29 PM by eccentrich (Science Fiction & Fantasy books, etc.)

Another roundup of recommendations, all of which were originally published in dead tree form. Many are interesting hybrids of SF and fantasy, though the fantasy elements usually dominate.

The Name of the Wind, Patrick Rothfuss
One of the best epic fantasies written in the last decade, it is a fat book I didn't want to see end. With an exceptional protagonist, highly skilled in many areas and very intelligent, he still manages to get into a lot of trouble. The book...

What I've been reading lately...

Posted July 28, 2013 at 05:34 PM by eccentrich (Science Fiction & Fantasy books, etc.)

This is an extra post, not really part of the recommendations series.

All of the books listed below are from my local library, which has gotten a lot of interesting books in recently, putting a bit of time pressure on me to finish them.

The first grouping is of books I've returned:

Quintessence, David Walton (forced to return unfinished due to time constraints, not really a reflection on the book, which sounded interesting)

Without a Summer,...

Oldies...

Posted July 23, 2013 at 08:28 PM by eccentrich (Science Fiction & Fantasy books, etc.)

Most of the books this time are oldish, 15-30 years old or so, and usually not that well known any more. Good books to look for in a used book store, if you like that kind of thing. Some do have ebook editions, or can be purchased used on Amazon or Half.com.

Journey to Fusang, William Sanders
About 25 years old, a rather hilarious alternate history novel about an Irish conman journeying across North America in a world where Europe is a cultural and technological backwater,...

Some of the new, some of the old

Posted July 13, 2013 at 09:03 PM by eccentrich (Science Fiction & Fantasy books, etc.)

A wide variety this time. The first six are SF, mostly indie published.

Quarter Share (Trader's Tales from the Golden Age of the Solar Clipper), Nathan Lowell
Space travelling traders, with a young man who joins a ship's crew after his mother dies and proceeds to do well through hard work, good study habits and a cheerful attitude. Sounds corny, but it is pretty enjoyable, and the series is quite popular. The author has been switching publishers over the last year,...

Mixing things up a bit

Posted July 4, 2013 at 04:55 PM by eccentrich (Science Fiction & Fantasy books, etc.)

Instead of my usual recommendations, I'm going to change things a little this week. First, I'm going to have a surprise guest blogger -- Jo Walton, a well known SF & F writer, blogger, and general guru. The person most surprised would probably be her, since she doesn't know about it.

I'm going to link to two of her recent blog entries, one where she talks about eight SF books over the last ten years that excited her, and another that does the same thing for fantasy. After each...
