SAO is not a prequel to Accel World any more than Accel World is a sequel to SAO.

They might be in the same universe but a different timeline, but even that is not clear.

Is all the author needs to say to give himself some wiggle room to do what he wants. the interview says that it is possible, and the connections (at least in their anime adaptations) are very clear, whether or not it was the authors intentions is still questionable. The random mentioning of the avengers also seems suspicious.
But this is all speculation so its possible I'm very wrong lol.
In my opinion the author should not waste a chance like connecting the two
