Porirua student awarded $60,000 scholarship for pharmacy studiesHigh school student Lance Edwards has a passion for pharmacy because of the help his ill grandfather received from a local pharmacist
Aotea College student Lance Edwards is the latest recipient of a scholarship which provides financial assistance to future pharmacy students in the Porirua area.
Pharmacist Buster Thomas, who worked in Porirua and then Johnsonville, contributed funds from his estate to the New Zealand Pharmacy Education and Research Foundation (NZPERF) to create the Buster Thomas Memorial Scholarship.
"Buster and his wife Maureen, who worked in his pharmacies with him, saw many capable students in the Porirua area who were unable to take the step on to university studies for financial reasons. As pharmacy was very dear to their lives they wanted to give students from the area a chance to become a pharmacist," NZPERF secretary Carolyn Hooper says.
"Lance has shown leadership qualities; being the student representative on the Board of Trustees, the chairperson of the student council and a senior prefect."
Mr Edwards says in his application he has had a passion for pharmacy for a number of years, because of the help his grandfather received from a local pharmacist.
A panel, comprising of NZPERF chair, an EVOLVE intern programme representative and a Porirua pharmacist determine the recipient of the scholarship which is valued at $15,000 per year for four years.
The scholarship will cover Mr Edwards' tuition fees, books and living costs for the 2014 to 2017 period.
The fund is only open to students from Porirua Basin.
Andy Davis - the first recipient of the scholarship in 2010 - is now completing his internship at Palmerston North Hospital Pharmacy.
NZPERF welcomes any donations to help fund its projects. Pharmacists can make a donation by contacting Carolyn Hooper on [Only registered and activated users can see links. Click Here To Register...] or include a donation as part of their Pharmaceutical Society membership fees.
NZPERF invests in and distributes funds for pharmacy-related research and education.
| You're on the internet either way, but thanks for sharing that with me. It actually takes some degree of effort--or rather, you actually have to track people outside the US. In the United States, people are pretty much already tracked for you. Quote:
