umm...4 example tokyo raven(that wierd shikigami thing),machine doll(the dragon)... its not fully 2D art(drawing) they somewhat 3D ish

Ah, well, prehaps they are improving their animation skills as Terrah said.
Other than that it could possibly be they're trying something new, or thought it would look better than a 2Dimmensional Image.
This is probably the best answer I could give you, since I do not know what goes on in the minds of the animators.
