Maybe the creators wanted to create a warped, modernised version of Noah's Ark? If those were their intentions... I'm not sure how to say this. The ending was rubbish. I think that may be the best way to put it. However, if you look at the second world war and the viral gas/machines in this anime movie, you can see some links with the Atomic bombs that were dropped on the Island of Nagasaki and Hiroshima. They were both outstanding creations of mass destruction that were developed almost entirely in secret, they both harboured radioactive gas that deformed and rotted most that came in contact with them starting from the inside out, Symptoms were generally shown almost straight away, and they both wiped out a mass populace. Obviously the damage in this anime is much more wide-scale, but i believe that the creators wished to convey a message from the past and use our fictional (Noah's Ark) and non-fictional (WW2) history to warn us of the destruction we have caused and may very well cause again. This may just be me reading too in depth, but i'm sure there were some pretty deep reasons behind this anime movie. Sorry for the long post- just wanted to get you guys thinking before everyone got cynical ;D
